Heniek: A Polish Boy’s Coming of Age in India
During World War II is the story of Henry Bonshek, born in eastern Poland in 1928. Within weeks of the beginning of the Second World War, with Hitler’s invasion of Poland, Stalin seized the eastern Kresy region. Like many children from that area, Henry was deported to a Soviet penal camp at the age of 12. Facing a future of starvation and disease, Henry’s story is a remarkable, true account of his survival, escape and renewal. It tells of his journey to Uzbekistan, the rebuilding of his life in India with the help of the Maharaja of Navanagar, and the beginning of a new era in England and finally in Australia after the war. Henry until his death two years ago lived on Tamborine Mountain, his wife Jean still lives at Eagle Heights.
